Managing a Country Garden seeded lawn
Wild flowers survive better in low fertility environment. No fertiliser should be used, and the ground cleaned of annual and perennial weeds prior to sowing.
You can sow country garden from March until October (Early autumn is a good time). Use 10g per m2 making sure that the seed bag is agitated before sowing as the flower seeds may drop to the bottom of the bag.
During the spring of the first year of sowing it is best to cut the lawn on a regular basis to a height of 2-3 inches. Remove cuttings for the summer months – allowing the grass to flower. After the flowering declines during the autumn, cut it to about 1-2 inches. Remove the cuttings again in a couple of months.
With this management every year you will enjoy the wild flowers and every year the area will be naturally reseeded with wild flower seeds. If you find one wild flower is becoming dominant in your garden, cut some of the flower so that less seed will drop to the soil in the autumn. Over time you can manipulate your wild flower garden in this way to achieve any balance of wild flowers you require. If you plant bulbs, remember not to mow them off in the spring.
